Product Description

Get ready to travel through history and taste mythology with this treat from Murshidabad. It began with the first Nawab of Bengal, Murshid Quli Khan’s fascination with weaving. It was he who brought this craft to Baluchar, a village in West Bengal where the weavers would bring alive scenes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana on the pallu of the sarees. However, during the British Raj the popularity of the craft declined. But for Shubho Tagore, a 20th century artist, who brought Akshay Kumar Das, an expert at weaving, and taught him the art of jacquard weaving, the art may not have survived. This special weave of Baluchari Saree is protected under Geographical Indicator.
